Mobility for a Cleaner World

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. established a fuel efficiency driving competition, the Honda Challenge Cup, to convey the vital significance of fuel economy in times of a crisis. This event aims to demonstrate how a fuel efficient driving style can make a big difference.

The objective of this competition is to promote the importance of fuel efficient driving amidst the rising price of gasoline; to help reduce harmful emissions released into the atmosphere by burning less fuel; and to validate Honda’s fuel-efficient and earth-friendly engine technology.

As responsible motorists, we must do our part for a cleaner tomorrow. By observing these fuel saving tips we are not only saving gas and money, but extending the lives of our vehicles as well. It also means that you‘re doing your part in saving the environment.

  1. 1.Plan your journey.

  3. Bullet    Having a planned route prevents you from getting lost and wasting extra gas and time

  1. 2.Change your driving habits.

  2. Bullet    Combine all your small trips and errands. Every time you start your engine cold, your car burns 20% more fuel

  3. Bullet    If possible, avoid traveling during rush hours

  4. Bullet    Try car pooling

  5. Bullet    Don’t drive if you don’t have to

  1. 3.Gas up wisely.

  3. Bullet    Don’t fill the fuel tank up to the brim to avoid spillage and tighten the gas cap securely

  4. Bullet    Use only clean, quality fuels

  1. 4.Get rid of all extra weight.

  2. Bullet   Remove unnecessary items from the trunk or inside the car. For every extra 100 pounds, your car’s gas mileage decreases by 2%

  3. Bullet    Extra weigh reduces mileage, especially when driving up inclines

  1. 5.Accelerate with care.

  2. Bullet    Avoid jack-rabbit starts. As much as possible, start your engine only when you are ready to go - idling wastes fuel and wears down the engine

  3. Bullet    Moderate your speed to minimize heavy braking and sharp accelerations. Rapid speeding and sudden braking decreases fuel efficiency by 5% in city driving

  4. Bullet    Maintain your speed. The most efficient speed depends upon the type of car, but it is usually around 80 kph. Driving above this speed decreases your gas mileage

  5. Bullet    Anticipate road conditions and drive steadily

  1. 6.Take the load off your engine in idle situation.

  2. Bullet    Idling gets zero kilometers to the liter. Avoid waiting inside your car when the engine is running and the air-conditioning is on

  3. Bullet    Place gear into neutral position when at a standstill

  4. Bullet    If you are expecting a lengthy wait, simply turn-off your engine

  1. 7.Shift gears sensibly.

  2. Bullet    You can save fuel by going through the lower gears gently and quickly

  3. Bullet    On inclines, shift up as soon as you can without lugging the engine

  4. Bullet    Use overdrive gears. When you use overdrive gears, your car’s engine speed goes down

  1. 8.Pick a lane and stay on it.

  2. Bullet    While driving, it is more economical to drive along a straight line. Frequent changing of lanes is unsafe and burns a lot more fuel

  3. Bullet    Avoid unnecessary overtaking

  1. 9.Use windows and air conditioning wisely.

  2. Bullet    Minimize the use of air conditioning. In some situations like driving at night or during cold seasons, consider turning the aircon off or set it at the lowest level to conserve fuel

  3. Bullet    Make it a habit to check tire pressure, especially after a sudden drop in temperature

  1. 12.Change oil and oil filters.

  2. Bullet    Change oil and oil filters at the recommended intervals by the manufacturer

  3. Bullet    Dirty oil and low oil levels can cause friction that lessens the engine’s efficiency

  1. 13.Observe proper maintenance.

  2. Bullet    Regularly tune-up your car to ensure best performance. Without a good tune-up, a vehicle uses as much as 20% more gasoline than a well-tuned vehicle

  3. Bullet    Give special attention to maintain clean air filters. A clogged air filter can waste about 1.5 kilometers per liter

  4. Bullet    Inspect suspension and chassis parts for misalignment

  1. 14.Consider replacing your old vehicle.

  2. Bullet    Consistently monitor your fuel consumption

  3. Bullet    Measure the cost of maintaining your old car against getting a newer, more fuel-efficient vehicle

One Earth. One Dream. One Choice.
